These are the contest rules for the 2020 edition of B-Jazz International Contest.
- B-Jazz International Contest (referred to as ‘B-Jazz’) is a competition for young, aspiring jazz musicians, with the aim to discover, promote and encourage them. B-Jazz International Contest 2020 is open to participants of all nationalities born on or after the 1st of January 1990. Exception: one bandmember can be not older than 40 years (born on or after the 1st of January 1980).
- B-Jazz is organised by Muziekmozaïek Folk & Jazz vzw (a non-profit organization). In this document Muziekmozaïek Folk & Jazz vzw is referred to as ‘organizer’.
- The competition aims for jazz in all its genres and styles. Participants retain full freedom of artistic expression, subject to the provisions of article 20 of this document. Participants provide (via www.bjazzcontest.be only) before the 31st of May 2019 to the organizer a YouTube video of maximum 5 minutes of their own work, be it live or recorded.
- The submitted recordings have to be original recordings of the participants
- Submitting YouTube video’s/recordings is done via the apply section on www.b-jazz.be and/or via www.bjazzcontest.be.
- The deadline for entries is the 31st of May 2019. Recordings that are submitted too late are not eligible for assessment and cannot be granted for a prize. The organizer will confirm the admissibility of the submission by stating the artist’s name on the website www.b-jazz.be.
- Participation in the contest implies the unconditional acceptance of these rules. All issues that are not addressed explicitly in these rules shall be settled sovereignly by the organizer.
- The formation of the jury for the qualifications and the jury for the final can be found in the ‘jury’ section on www.b-jazz.be. The organizer reserves the right to change this formation. The decision of the jurors is final.
- The jurors give their word to complete confidentiality of the deliberations and voting. There will be no oral or written communication about the deliberations and voting.
- Based on the proposal of the jury, the organizer chooses ultimately three participants as a finalist for B-Jazz 2020.
- The winner of Getxo Jazz Festival 2019 and a band chosen by Saint Louis College of Music get a place in the finals.
- The finalists perform live in OPEK (Public Entrepot for the Arts), Vaartkom 4, 3000 Leuven on Friday the 20th and Saturday the 21st of March 2020. The finalists have complete freedom in the choice of their repertoire, but have to play at least their interpretation of the mandatory composition of the B-Jazz Composition Contest 2020 (which will be anounced later). The maximum playing time during the final is 40 minutes per band.
- The organizer provides the following equipment (backline) to the finalists during their performance: an acoustic piano, a digital piano, a drum kit (excluding cymbals), a bass amp, a guitar amp and a full PA system (including technicians).
- The prizes of the contest are:
- ‘Grand Prize Albert Michiels’ = the chance to play concerts:
- at Getxo Jazz Festival (Spain),
- at Saint Louis College of Music (Rome, Italy) and
- on the Druivenfestival (Hoeilaart, Belgium).
- Sabam for Culture Prize = 500 euros
- All finalists take home a professional audio recording of their performance as well as a professional video recording. Eventually at least two of the compositions they performed on a B-Jazz compilation cd.
- There will be an article on all finalists in Jazz&mo’ magazine
- ‘Grand Prize Albert Michiels’ = the chance to play concerts:
- The organizer provides for the stay of the finalists in Leuven during the period of the contest finale (Friday 20th till Sunday 22nd of March 2020).
- A contribution to the travel expenses is provided up to 0,10 euro per kilometer, with a maximum of 100 euros per musician and 1 000 euros per band. The distance that qualifies for this calculation is measured from the place of departure to 3000 Leuven (Belgium). Note: in case of an intercontinental trip an extra contribution may be granted upon approval of the organizer.
- Personal data which are obtained by the organizer via the competition can only be passed to official partners of the contest for promotional purposes or used for newsletters of the organizer. Participants retain the right to oppose the aforementioned use of their personal information and can see at any time and change.
- Participants grant the organizer the non-exclusive right to reproduce the submitted recordings and the recordings made of the performances during the competition finals and to communicate these recordings to the public, make them available to the public or use them for promotional purposes for the benefit of the contest, the organizer or its authorized partners for the duration of the copyright. These rights apply worldwide and the participants recognize that they will not receive any corresponding fee.
- Each participant warrants that he/she is the author/copyright holder of the submitted recordings. The organizer accepts no responsibility for any breaches of the (copy)rights of third parties. Each participant shall indemnify the organizer for all possible claims of third parties in this respect. Recordings which third parties may assert rights to are not accepted.
- Participation in B-Jazz is done exclusively through the subscription module via www.b-jazz.be / www.bjazzcontest.be.
